Entrance Slip Sep 17: Grant and Zeichner

      I think there is some significant overlap between the experiences in the text and my own experiences in the classroom. I find that support for disadvantaged individuals is still sometimes more said than done. However, one point they don't seem to emphasize is how every students learning impacts the learning of students around them, both in terms of the atmosphere and community of the class and in terms of the resources being made available to each student. I think each teacher must in this aspect judge their own capability in response to the classes they engage with and reach out both to other teachers and to systems organizers to make sure that they can provide meaningful education without exclusion.

 

Exit Slip Sep 10: Frank McCourt

I think one part of the interview that really captured my attention was how Frank McCourt handled negativity in his classes. Giving the students time to express their grievances and opening up a conversation about the material. I think this highlights how it can be useful to see the instructor, the students, and the material as three separate components of learning. Especially when negativity directed towards the instructor may in fact be due to a student's conflict with the material. In this case Frank McCourt separated himself from the material and it seemed to be a good way to both prevent that negativity building into a grudge and create some common ground to connect with the students.
